Beat Priorities

Through consultation with the members of the public in this beat we regularly set out a number of priorities to be tackled.

  • 1. ROWDY/NUISANCE BEHAVIOUR
  • ROWDY/NUISANCE BEHAVIOUR
A group of youths have begun to gather on a service road that runs between the side of 2 Aston Avenue and the rear of the shops on Woodside Road.
It is suspected that the group maybe using controlled drugs and their general presence is causing a nuisance to local residents.
There have also been issues of minor criminal damage and environmental problems, such as fly tipping, at the location.

    Our Response
The NPT will make regular patrols of the area, engage with any groups found loitering there and move them on.
Any offences will be dealt with in a positive manner.
The NPT will also liaise with local residents affected as well as local Councillors and Nottingham City Council staff.
Attempts will be made to improve security at the location to prevent people gathering and stop environmental issues such as fly tipping.

    Monthly update - September 2011

NPT staff have included visits to this location throughout their regular patrols of the area since the priority was opened.
They have also liaised with local shopkeepers and those residents living in the immediate vicinity.
So far, no arrests have been made and there have been very few sightings of groups gathering in the area.
The City Council Neighbourhood Manager and Local Councillors have been made aware of the issue and have completed a site visit to the location.
A quotation has been obtained for improving the security at the site, including new fencing and gates. Partner agencies are now looking at possible funding options and the proposed improvements will be discussed at the next City Council Area Panel meeting, which is scheduled for 25th October 2011.

2      THEFT OF PEDAL CYCLES

Since 01/02/2011 (6 weeks) we have received a total of 11 reports of pedal cycles being stolen from the University of Nottingham campus at University Park. These pedal cycles have been stolen from a number of different locations across the campus. The vast majority of the pedal cycles were secured with some sort of lock and/or chain.

Our Response
We will consider a range of options including increased high visibility patrols, increased use of CCTV cameras and education amongst students and staff. We will look to liaise with local second hand shops to ascertain where the stolen bikes are being sold.
Positive action will be taken against anyone suspected of stealing a bike from the campus. Suspects will be arrested and the University will then look to issue them with letters banning them from the campus.

Monthly update - September 2011

For the past three weeks officers from the Canning Circus NPT have been involved in Operation Chanfrin, a police operation to tackle cycle crime on the University of Nottingham campus.

A total of three people have been arrested to date, two on suspicion of the theft of a number of cycles from the campus.

A third person was arrested for handling stolen goods in connection with an offence where some high value musical instruments had been stolen from the Music School on the campus.

A mixture of plain clothes and uniformed officers, as well as a ‘capture bike’ are being used on campus in a bid to reduce cycle thefts and target those responsible.

A crime prevention event to take place on the University campus is in the process of being planned for October.
The event will be aimed at raising awareness of cycle crime as well as offering security advice and crime prevention products, such as Smartwater.
Further details on the event will be advertised once a date and location has been finalised.
