Distraction Burglaries

Alert message sent 27/01/2012 18:31:00
Information sent on behalf of Nottinghamshire Police

Dear All,

Recently in East Midlands, Yorkshire, Humber and North West Regions there has been an increase in distraction burglaries. South Yorkshire has been the most affected force with 19 offences.

Here are a few keywords that have been used by offenders to gain entry to homes.

Ø      State they are there to repair the roof (in particular loose or cracked tiles) or guttering / fascias repairs.

Ø      State they have previously done work at the victim’s address and are there to check on their work, sometimes asking the victim “Do you remember me?”

Ø      State that the work will not cost anything as it is still under warranty / guarantee or it will only cost a ‘cup of tea’.

Ø      State that their ‘dad’ or ‘father’ has completed previous work at the victim’s address or they (the offenders) have been sent by their ‘dad’ or father’.

Ø      Ask to view or enter the loft / attic area

Ø      Ask the victim to borrow a ladder (this is a distraction technique used by offenders)

Ø      Ask the victim for a drink / cup of tea (this is a distraction technique used by offenders)

Ø      Tell the victim that they need to get a bigger ladder / tools from their van (this is how they leave the address)

Please contact your local police on 101 or 999 in an emergency if you have any suspicions relating to this in your area

Regards

Sean
